Before breakfast, Anna’s grandmother liked to swim in a small bay. A morgondopp or morning dip, her grandmother called the short swim. Anna considered the water too cold for swimming that early. Instead, she sat on a boulder.
The sun warmed her hair and shells gleamed in the sands. Gulls soared over the rocky islets and a family of swans fed in the shallows. An oystercatcher with a bright red beak stood on a rock by the reeds, perhaps guarding a nearby nest.
As her grandmother slowly swam toward shore, Anna sat warm on her boulder watching the birds in the bay.
